Chapter 14

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 2, 1945

THE PHILIPPINE SEA

DAY THREE | NOON

The relentless setting sun burned down on Josh's head. Even with his eyes closed, he could see its glare. The ocean sparkled, fresh, inviting, still as a lagoon. With no sharks in sight, men slid from the raft into the cool water, first splashing it on their heads and then sipping it defiantly.

Again, Josh wondered if he should risk it. Did saltwater really drive a man mad? Well, he'd find out soon as more and more men gulped it down.

Alongside Josh, a grizzled sailor dove and resurfaced, eyes rolling. "I had a drink! It's down there, friends. The ship’s just down below. With all the water you can drink."

Was it true? For a moment, Josh almost believed it. Maybe he should dive down, see for himself.

"That's not possible," said a skeptical voice.

"You're lying," shouted Patterson, leaning over the side of the raft.

"Do you remember the scuttlebutt?" the grizzled sailor roared. "The one with lots of cold water? I dove down and turned it on, guys. It works. The water is fresh. Fresh. I'll show you! Follow me!"

Sobbing, a lost look in his eyes, Timmy plunged in. Other hysterical men followed, diving down to find the ship. Some even pulled off their life jackets before diving.

Could it possibly be true? Josh looked over at Lee, who licked his salt-white lips and shook his head.
